What to check before clearing left-behind belongings

Possession and disposal rights need checking before loading starts.

Possession and disposal rights need checking before loading starts. A careful first pass can prevent rework and make the removal conversation more precise.

Confirm possession first

Items left behind do not automatically become available for disposal. The applicable process depends on how the property changed hands and who owns the belongings. Ask the person responsible for the property, and seek legal advice when notice or storage duties are unclear.

Document what is there

Before changing the space, make a dated inventory and photos for the owner's records. Identify documents, medications, valuables, and items that could belong to someone else. Keep disputed items off the removal list.

Give the crew a written scope

After the owner has confirmed what may be removed, write down the rooms and categories. A written keep list is as useful as a removal list.

Quick checklist

  • Who can authorize removal?
  • Which items must stay or be reviewed?
  • Which rooms and storage areas are included?
  • What access or parking constraints apply?
  • What date does the property need to be ready?

For the service scope, see the related cleanout page. You can also plan the details of your property cleanout.
